Nether Providence Sustainable Committee

The NPT Sustainable Committee was formed by the Board of Commissioners in December, 2007, in order to support the Township’s commitment to greenhouse gas reductions under the Cool Cities agreement. Its general duties are twofold:

1.  to assist the Board of Commissioners in developing policies and regulations to implement the Township's committment to clean energy; and

2.  to inform and educate government, businesses, residents, and workers on practical ways to reduce carbon emissions and save both energy and money.

Committee members are appointed by the Board; meeting are open to the public, and are held on the third Wednesday of each month.  The Committee also has an official liaison to the School District, as well as to the Board.  In addition, we welcome informal connections with other community groups to share resources.

Our Mission

1.    To assist the Township in utilizing clean energy sources and lowering greenhouse gas emissions by proposing ways that both the Township and its residents can switch to clean energy, reduce energy usage, and address other energy and environmental concerns.
2.    To develop, and aid in implementing, a greenhouse gas reduction target and action plan to reach that target.
3.    To develop and implement programs to educate residents, contractors, workers, business owners and visitors about the Township’s energy policies and about programs or efforts they can undertake to lessen their individual or family energy usage and/or greenhouse gas emissions.  This will include building community awareness and understanding of energy conservation, sustainability strategy, and programs such as ICLEI’s Cool Cities program, the Federal Government’s EnergyStar program, and the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Certification program.
4.    To identify funding sources and resources that could be used to implement programs designed to lower energy consumption and/or lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Smart Power

Municipal Building

Nether Providence Township was an early achiever in the Smart Power campaign. Out of 20 communities in southeastern Pennsylvania to meet the campaign goals, Nether Providence was among the very first. Not only has the local government committed to buying 20% of their municipal energy from Green Options sources by 2010 but local volunteers also organized and signed up over 7% of the utility customers in the community to utility Green Options like Peco Wind.

As an award for creating such significant consumer demand for clean energy, the Campaign was awarded the township with a 1.26 kWh solar photovoltaic system that is placed on the Township Highway Garage. This highly efficient and very aesthetic Sunpower system can be easily expanded up to 3 kWh with the same inverter. Additionally, the roof space at the garage can accommodate an even greater amount of PV, and would be an ideal location within the community for a large solar energy system.
